WPI Major Qualifying Projects

MQPs at NEST Lab are typically done between A Term and C Term. Students who are doing a double major may work also in D Term to finalize the project. We won't consider MQPs distributed across less than 3 terms.

The typical organization of an MQP at NEST Lab is as follows.

Objectives:

  • Produce a document that specifies the problem statement and the objectives of the MQP.
    • The objectives must be *measurable*
    • At the end of the project, you will be evaluated according to these objectives!
    • *You* set the objectives, after discussing with the advisors
  • (optional) Describe the preliminary design of your solution.

Evaluation:

  • General clarity of the document: structure, grammar, quality of the figures
  • Completeness of the citations to existing work

Objectives:

  • Complete the initial design
  • Implement the initial design
  • Identify the shortcoming of the design
  • Integrate your findings in the document produced in A-Term

Evaluation:

  • Depth of the design - did you try the first thing you thought?
  • Independence - did you propose your solution?
  • General clarity of the document: structure, grammar, quality of the figures
  • Completeness of the citations to existing work

Objectives:

  • Finalize the design
  • Implement the final design
  • Validate the final design
  • Identify the shortcoming of the final design
  • Integrate your findings in the document produced in B-Term

Evaluation:

  • Thoroughness of the validation - did you test your design in realistic conditions?
  • Adherence to the objectives formalized in A Term
  • General clarity of the document: structure, grammar, quality of the figures
  • Depth of “lessons learned” section - what did you learn from this project? how can it be improved by a future MQP team?
